Crop Tour- Saturday, Aug. 20th

Ask the Taxman!

Question?

My husband and son have been farming together for years, with each having their own equipment and land. In the last 10 years, in order to get larger equipment, they have shared the cost at 50% each. They now have over $100,000 each in their own share of this equipment. My husband would like to retire, and sell our son his half of the equipment. We would like to do this over a period of years. Can this legally be done and how? All of the equipment has been written off using the first-year deductions, so there is no remaining tax cost.

Wind Turbines are Killing Bats... Big Time!

During the wind turbine boom, bat deaths have escalated and will continue barring remedies that can save bats' lives. The deaths aren't from bats flying into turbine blades; rather, they die from lung hemorrhages caused by enduring a huge drop in air pressure as they fly past the blades.

The deaths are a growing concern for farmers, who appreciate bats for their ability to snarf up thousands of insects, many of them harmful to crops, saving North American farmers a whopping $3.7 billion a year in annual losses.

One potential remedy: Fitting the wind turbine towers with sound devices that emit a high-frequency pitch only bats can hear, helping them avoid the blades.

Coffee Shop Followup

Update: this news story seen prior on News From The Coffee Shop

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission has approved CME Group Inc.’s plan to raise the daily trading limits for Chicago Board of Trade corn futures to 40¢/bu. from 30¢ despite resistance to the change from members of the corn industry.

The new limits will go into effect on Aug. 22 for CBOT corn futures, corn options and mini-sized corn futures. Under the CME group proposal, the corn futures daily price limit will be expandable once to 60¢ when at least two contracts close at limit bid or limit offer on the previous trading day. The current 30¢ daily limit for corn futures is expandable to 45¢, then again to 70¢ when at least two contracts close at limit bid or limit offer.

Nitrogen Fixing Cereal Crops

Among tricks geneticists want to develop in cereal crops: Fixing Nitrogen, which would save farmers a bundle in raising corn, wheat, and other grain, which need added nitrogen for high yields. It'd save rivers and lakes a lot of pollution from field runoff as well. Univ. of Alberta biologists are working to transfer some genes from legumes, which fix their own nitrogen, to a wide variety of crops that can't.

Unverferth unveils 2,000-bu. Brent grain cart

Unverferth Manufacturing introduces a 2,000-bu. Brent grain cart. The model 2096 Avalanche cart features an unloading speed up to 1,000 bu./min. and a pistol-grip, remote-control auger. The new grain cart is designed for the high-acreage crop farmer who needs high-volume capacities and rapid unloading speeds.

The Avalanche features a drivetrain design that combines a belt-driven, 20-in.-dia. floor auger with a heavy-duty, direct-drive 90° gearbox. The vertical auger is 24 in. in diameter and pivots up and down. The multidirectional downspout is operated with the remote control.
The Avalanche 2096 is available with tracks or steerable in-line tandem wheels. A hydraulically cushioned tongue helps smooth the ride and reduce drawbar stress. A Weatherguard tarp comes standard to protect loads. Hydraulic brakes are optional for the steerable tandem. Side- and rear-mounted cameras also may be purchased to connect to a monitor in the tractor cab.
Price of the 2096 Avalanche with steerable in-line tandem is $130,000.
