Corn futures are called 15 to 20 cents higher with 2011/12 ending stocks extremely tight, Brugler Marketing said Thursday morning. The monthly WASDE report put corn ending stocks for 2010/11 at 940 m/bu. compared to the average trade estimate of 922 m/bu. and 2011/12 ending stocks at 714 m/bu. compared to 751 m/bu. for the average trade estimate.
Soybean futures are expected to open 10 to 15 cents higher, Brugler Marketing said. The USDA put soybean ending stocks for 2010/11 at 230 m/bu.. Trade estimates were 218 m/bu. for 2010/11. The USDA projects 2011/12 ending stocks at 155 m/bu. compared to the average trade guess of 168 m/bu. and down from 175 m/bu. in the July report.

Nitrogen Fixing Cereal Crops
Among tricks geneticists want to develop in cereal crops: Fixing Nitrogen, which would save farmers a bundle in raising corn, wheat, and other grain, which need added nitrogen for high yields. It'd save rivers and lakes a lot of pollution from field runoff as well. Univ. of Alberta biologists are working to transfer some genes from legumes, which fix their own nitrogen, to a wide variety of crops that can't.

The Avalanche features a drivetrain design that combines a belt-driven, 20-in.-dia. floor auger with a heavy-duty, direct-drive 90° gearbox. The vertical auger is 24 in. in diameter and pivots up and down. The multidirectional downspout is operated with the remote control.
The Avalanche 2096 is available with tracks or steerable in-line tandem wheels. A hydraulically cushioned tongue helps smooth the ride and reduce drawbar stress. A Weatherguard tarp comes standard to protect loads. Hydraulic brakes are optional for the steerable tandem. Side- and rear-mounted cameras also may be purchased to connect to a monitor in the tractor cab.

Hogs Set New Price Records
The President signed a bill to increase the debt ceiling and the stock market crashed. Those were the two big stories in the financial markets this week. As a result, the media paid little attention to the fact that this week saw new all-time records for pork and hog prices. Iowa-Minnesota carcass prices averaged $106.30/cwt on Thursday. Lower-than-expected pork production and strong export demand are given credit for the hog price records. South Korea is suspending through September their tariff on chilled pork imports to counter high prices and short supplies caused as they fight a foot and mouth disease outbreak.

U.S. corn yields headed for 5-year low
U.S. farmers may see their lowest corn yields in five years, according to some analyst estimates, after extreme Midwest heat in recent weeks hit crops during the crucial pollination stage.
This year’s corn harvest is expected to produce nationwide yields averaging 150 bushels an acre, Commodity Weather Group, LLC, a Bethesda, Md.-based consultant, said in an Aug. 2 report. That’s 5.5 percent below the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s current estimate, 158.7 bushels an acre, and would be the lowest yield since the crop averaged 149.1 bushels in 2006.
Commodity Weather Group analysts are among many who believe the USDA will downsize its crop outlook after a wet, cold spring delayed fieldwork and a recent bout of temperatures near or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit wave cooked corn fields across the Midwest.
