What If?

Here is a tool that you can put on your blog. Guys can use it to make decisions about what to do with their crop.  For example, to spray fungicide or not?  You can play with the numbers and see what types of scenarios would make sense to spend the extra dollars. From Adam White via email

US Gov't Default Possible

Moody's fired another warning shot across the bow late Wednesday when it stated that it was placing the U.S. credit rating under review for possible lowering. The credit rating agency said it must do so because the failure of Congress and the Administration to come to an agreement on the debt ceiling places the United States at increased risk of default.

This month's heat has speeded up maturity for the corn crop a bit. The above graphic depicts when the crop should be at 50% pollination. Two-thirds of the national crop should be in the critical pollination stage from July 15 to 30. SOURCE: Commodity Weather Group via Farm Futures Daily Email Blast

Corn Yields Important!

Some traders saw the bullish report yesterday as the start of a retightening of pipeline supply expectations, which in turn could end up being the result of yield losses and better than expected demand, the CME Group said in its Wednesday morning report.

Corn could rebound from overnight losses this morning, after USDA raised its forecast of both old and new crop ending stocks less than expected. Early quotes in the over the counter market suggested a modestly higher open after corn traded sharply lower on economic concerns overnight.

Tassel Time!

From Brett Vogel

Drought Sends Beef Cow Slaughter Up

Beef cow slaughter has surged the past two weeks as cow-calf operations from Arizona to Maryland try to cope, with, in many areas, one of the most severe droughts in years.

While beef cow slaughter remains below the level of 2010 on a year-to-date basis, cow numbers for the weeks of June 19 and 26, the latest week for which we have cow slaughter data, show slaughter up 5.8% and 7.9%, respectively, from last year’s levels. There simply is not enough grass to support cow herds. Add to that the fact this drought has been in place since last fall and we get a situation where there is little hay on hand and the hay that is available is very expensive. Even with a positive outlook for the beef sector — which we still hold — many cattlemen simply do not have the necessary resources to hang on.
