Chicken supplies have been trending down in recent months and data from the USDA indicates the situation will likely not improve anytime soon.
Faced with sharply higher feed costs and softer food service demand, broiler producers have embarked on another round of cutbacks, similar to what we saw following the recession and bankruptcy of the top broiler producer at the time, Pilgrim’s Pride.

Pioneer Seed Plot- Buchanan County, IA
We harvested the plot Sunday Oct. 23rd, hard to believe as flat as it was after the storm on July 11th, but the hybrids ranged from 185 to 235 bu./ac... From Adam White, Pioneer Seed Rep.
Our Reply: Thanks Adam. I've attached two pictures that were submitted to the blog after the storm in July, as a reminder of how bad it seemed at the time!
Now what would the yields been if?--- That's a big IF!

Herd rebuilding will have to wait
The monthly slaughter data released Oct. 21, confirmed what a flurry of weekly reports and anecdotal reports had been saying for sometime. The pace of cow and heifer slaughter accelerated in September and herd rebuilding will likely have to wait a bit longer.
USDA reported that US beef producers sent 1.414 million head of female cattle (heifers and cows) to slaughter in September, about 1% more than the comparable period a year ago and 8.5% more than the five year average for the month. The increase in female cattle slaughter was due to a sharp increase in the number of cows coming to market. Heifer slaughter for the month was down 6% from a year ago while total cow slaughter rose 12%. Year to date cow slaughter is up 200,000 head or 4.2% compared to the same period a year ago while heifer slaughter for the year is down 1.3%.

Soybean harvest coming to a close
Looks like a couple more days of spectacular weather to finish up those beans before a chance of rain moves into the area. That being said, it's getting pretty hard to find a field of beans in the country side!

Seinfeld
My sleep schedule is completely messed up. No matter what time I get up (noon, 2pm, 5pm), I can't fall asleep until 6am. That means I'm only sleeping with my wife for about 30 minutes. I blame it on the MLB Playoffs on TBS. The primetime games push the full hour of Seinfeld from 1am, to 4am. Seinfeld and sleep are two of my favorite things in life. I guess Seinfeld is just a little bit more important.

Grains Called Higher
CORN: Corn futures are called 4 to 6 cents higher. Informa Economics lowered their US yield estimate from 151 to 149.5, still 1.4 BPA higher than the USDA September number, but smaller than some in the trade had expected. Informa decreased planted corn acres by 430,000 acres and estimated the crop size at 12.519 billion bushels, said Brugler Marketing.
SOYBEANS: Soybeans futures are expected to open the day 7 to 11 cents higher. Informa raised their per bushel bean yield by 0.3 BPA matching the USDA 41.8 BPA from the September supply demand report. Funds bought an estimated 8,000 soybean contracts.

NE Iowa Crop Condition
Northeast Iowa - For our operation, we plant about 70% corn and about 30% soybeans. Presently, we only have about 5% of our harvest completed. We are mildly surprised on overall condition of crop considering the heat we had to endure this summer. We did receive enough rain though in April to bring the corn along nicely, but the beans have suffered tremendously.
Yields for corn have been a little better than last year at about 180 bu/acre. Beans seem to be in the 50 bu/acre range, which is considerably lower than last year.
One of the things we did that helped this year was applying insecticide and fungicide, early on, that helped fight off Asian beetles and worm issues. Others in the area that omitted these applications have seen problems on both of these fronts.

Marketing Advice
Analogy used to describe the current corn market.....
"My advice continues to be, tie up your "dinghy" at the dock, find some things to do on shore, and wait for the storm to pass. When you start seeing the funds heading back out into deeper waters, you will know the time is right and we will once again be setting sail for the high seas...I just don't think this is the time. "
